I think it has perhaps more to do with the fact that a lot more people
came up on DEC systems in high school or college, and they were inherently
more accessible and therefore more hackable, and as a result there are
more people desirous of DEC gear to feed their nostalgia.
IBM machines tended to be big power hungry behemoths that stood fixed in a
computer room with a glass wall in front of it, with exceptions being the
1401 and 1620, for which there is certainly a not insignificant collector
base.
