Ah HA! I missed that one when I was looking for what had triggered the
corruption.

I'm using Alpine and it apparently
handled it since I never even noticed
until it was brought up. I do purposefully run a UTF-8 capable terminal
emulator though.
Until recently, I was using Windoze Telnet. My ISP suddenly decided to
drop telnet access and I had to switch to "PUTTY" SSH.
PUTTY is pretty good, but it has a few bizarre idosyncracies, such as its
non-standard handling of cut and paste.
I use Outhouse quite a bit at work, and don't like it.
