You *need* the battery for the system to boot. It's probably a 1/2 AA 3.6V
lithium. Given the age and the corrosion, you probably need a new one.
Don't those compact Performa machines use a square 4.5V alkaline battery?
And yes, I do believe that they require a battery to start.
