Wow, that's bizarre. 6502s don't fail very often.
I was given an Apple ][+ which was deader than a doornail... and indeed,
it was the 6502 that was shot. It was an SY6502 (Synertek) FWIW.
Dropped a new one in the socket and the machine runs just fine.
