I can't say that I've ever seen one that way, including pre-war "kit"
models, like the Meissner (they of "signal shifter" VFO fame):

Our 1948 10" Philco tabletop certainly didn't use that scheme (had a
huge transformer in it though). And neither did our "big screen"
1953 RCA set.
