Hopefully there's a plan to rebuild it in the
longer term though, using bits
from a sacrificial core. Not a job I'd fancy, but doubtless possible (I've
seen some unbelievably small cores!). It even seems like one of those oddball
projects that IBM would be up for sponsoring...
In the good old days, core planes were indeed repaired by hand,
often during initial construction. Sometimes you can see the tiny splices.
I do not think I have any busted planes yet, but I would be willing to
try if I had too. My eyes are still pretty damn good.
