They've been around since 1947; basically a very low wattage heating unit to placed
inside of pianos and closets and the like.
Small heaters like these are also commonly used inside gun safes, where expensive pieces
of steel inside a large thermal mass are at risk of rusting from condensation caused by
daily thermal cycling. Especially if the safe is out in an unheated garage, as they often
are.
