Yes, in fact, 6pin standard 'RJ12' connectors are how I make my MMJ cables
since I'm too cheap to try and find MMJ connectors and a crimper. The
middle four pins are the most important: TX+ TX- RX- and RX+. The outside
two pins (1 and 6) are for flow control.
Personally, I just use a pair of dikes (side-cuts) or end-cuts to trim
them off. If you have a R$ RJ45/RJ12 crimping tool, you can also use the
'cutting' (not stripping pair) razorblade to cut it off. That will cut it
off perfectly I've found.
