It is a common failure - seems to be the preferred failure mode for laptop
power supplies. I had a Samsung N486S/25N PSU that had a cable break inside
the grommet, and an IBM where the cable actually came away from the barrel
connector. One of my friends has a Compaq Presario M2-something-or-other with
the same sort of problem...
