You're making me feel very old. When I was a kid, I used to make a neon
bulb blink using one resistor and one capacitor.
I can do it with just a single resistor and a (properly aged) neon bulb,
on US line voltage. :) I can even control the rate of blinking using my
hand and an ordinary lamp. ;)
