It is rather unlikely that it would have corroded off, particularly
with a gold or gold plated pin. More likely that it was broken during
installation, and possibly continued to work for a while with the two
broken ends pushing against each other.
It could be that it was bent under, still in contact with the socket's
contact, and due to moisture/thermal stresses, the weakened metal
eventually broke. The other half of the lead wasn't in the socket, so this
seems to be a likely scenario.
