Yes, it's been powering up with just the AC adapter and 9-volt battery, and it boots
fine with the hard drive cable disconnected (it's happy booting from a floppy).
I'm pretty sure I tried pressing the side buttons in all sorts of combinations -- what
specifically are you describing? Just press them and let go, or hold them down while
powering on, etc. ?
