In some ways today is good time to play with tubes ... you can get
them cheap
compared to the past era's.
Running tubes at low plate voltages was not really
an innovation -
engineers had always done this, and many normal tubes will actually work
at a quarter rated plate voltage or less.
I had a few of those submini dual triodes, wire leads and all.
