What leads people to believe that the original PDP-11/35 power supply
(H742 or H7420) or the PDP-11/44 power supply (H7140) aren't switching
supplies?

Although I think (if you want to be pedantic about it) the +15V output of
the H742 (and maybe others) is a linear regualtor.
All DEC power bricks that I've seen are switchers. The H7140 is certainly
a switcher.
