I did some searching through the Whirlwind archives at MIT, and believe
you're correct about the 6888. MIT worked with Sylvania to develop the
SR-1782A (6888), an improvement over the 7AK7 which was developed for the
Whirlwind system. The 6888 was used as a gate tube throughout the
AN/FSQ-7.
