I've noticed a lot of commonalities, such as the

Was the Unix port for both (one 68010, the other x86) done by the same outfit
(Convergent?)?
Anyone know for sure?

Re: Supported OS's - no argument. As far as OS
developed by Unisys? Uh
huh. Hardware developed by Unisys? Ever heard of Convergent? (I'll
concede the point on the later models).
Only a few models were ever OEM-ed from Convergent:
U6000/50, U6000/51, U6000/55, U6000/60 (but after acquisition
by Unisys).
The U6000/30 and U6000/31 came via CT but were actually
majority component OEM-ed from ACER.
The U6000/65 was a Unisys San Jose product and the U6000/15
and U6000/35 were Unisys Salt Lake products - all designed in
house. After the 15/35 the hardware came from Unisys San Jose
(from original designs done at Unisys Flemington). Currently
U6000 series home grown Unisys hardware comes from UNISYS in
Mission (LA).
There is also mention elsewhere of Sequent branded as U6000
