I think so too. That was (is) how the IBM world communicated, along
with the twinax devices up through AS400. I was surprised to see that
you could still buy new token-ring 16/4 cards as late as the early 00's
from companies besides IBM.
The urgency in this is I suspect that like 80's -> 00's computers, comms
gear will all be tossed out as it is replaced by equipment supporting IP
and now is the time to be trying to find it.
I disagree that it is simply a 'matter of software'. A lot of dedicated
hardware was EOLed a long time ago, and it never had software created
to support newer protocols.
The other problem I see is that I suspect that detailed documentation is
going to be even MORE difficult to find than is is for computers.
