Have you considered trying one of those newfangled
2.5" SCSI RAID array
drives? There aren't that many around that are straight SCSI, since most
are SAS, but you should be able to find some, and they should be more than
big enough.
Another option (if slightly suboptimal as well)... network storage and
booting? These machines aren't that fast to begin with, so using network
booting shouldn't be that awful.
