Yes, the Stratus machine at the Milwaukee School of Engineering did
that while I was there, but it was a processor board. Many Stratus
sites have similar stories.
I remember wandering around Weta Digital circa 2001, and the same was true
of their SGI systems (in my case it was hard disks that I was told about) -
I'm not sure if the "phone home" was an SGI feature, or something that
they'd cooked up themselves. It seemed like a useful feature for any kind
of environment where uptime was crucial.
