At one time, Apple COMPUTER (I don't know whether they were related to the
current "Apple Consumer Electronics"), wanted to DONATE one Apple computer
to every school in the USA. In exchange, they wanted to be able to deduct
from their taxes at the "warehousing
distributor"? price (the lowest price
that Apple sold them for wholesale). The
IRS said, "NO!" They declared
that Apple could not deduct more than the base cost of the raw materials
used to make the computer - no labor, fixed costs, etc. The IRS also
cited the spectre that, if they agreed to it, then "EVERY computer company
might do it!" Can you imagine the consequences to our society if the
schools had excess FREE computers??!?
