I have heard this mentioned before. I know even less about DSPs than I do
about microcontrollers and FPGAs, and I am already concerned about the
steepness of the learning curve without adding another unknown.

You really want some hardware to preprocess the
signals somewhat.
Has anyone considered using a DSP?
