I am pretty sure I have the ICL service manual for this machine. It's
pretty much a 'boardswapper guide' but I can see if it says anything
about aligning the photocells. I do remember it tells you not to
dismantle the hammer bank, something I read _after_ I had stripped and
reassembled it.
I should have been more clear -- only the top of the finger is missing, the bottom is
still present, so it should in theory be generating proper pulses.

I should see if I can pull the assembly out and clean it, I suppose if the optical
sensors are dirty it'd be a problem.
From what I remember the hammer bank/belt pulley unit
comes out quite
easily. I'd do that first, you will then have better access to
the
photocell unit.
