I'm not so sure. ?Reading and writing wasn't
commonplace and
transcribing scrolls wasn't commonplace. ?Paper was reused (re: the
Archimedes palimpsest <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes_Palimpsest>)
which makes me think that stuff worth the trouble of writing down
probably wasn't crap.
Nearly everyone who could write back then was probably working for
someone (i.e. the Emporor/King/Pope), so if he told you to write
something down - well, you had better start writing it down. And we
know people in power almost never have good taste.
