I did try Win 3.1 on my old 286-12, with about
1-1.5 megs of memory.
It was so slow, it took it a few minutes to finish crashing :-)
I don't know what you were doing wrong. I did quite a bit of useful work
on Windows 3.11 running on a 286-8 with 1MB RAM. Ran just fine.
