Hm, I got my first license in 1972, and five-level
Baudot was still the
standard then, ISTR. Most folks were using things like Model 28s.
I have an idea that at one time radio amateurs in the UK could only use
ITA2 (aka Murray, Baudot, although strictly it's not the same) by the
terms of the license. Nowadays 'Data' trasnmissions using ITA5 (ASCII)
are not uncommon, I think the only restriction now is that it can't be a
'secret code or cipher', which ASCII clearly isn't.
