The 98228A Disc ROM in a 9825T Computer is required to control 9895 drives.
Ah ha - I believe we're on the right track now. Here is the module:

Seems like the ROM I mentioned still required a utility tape to format
disks and also used a different format. While I don't have the drives
the 98228A module was made for, one of them is an "AMIGO" command set
drive, so that suggests others that I do have may work as well. Also,
there's the HP9845 project that allows a PC with HPIB card to emulate
many HP drives.
So now to set an ebay saved search for that module....thanks!
