I have an old Altos tape drive that uses DC300 tapes. I went to the local
hardware store and bought a rubber grommet with an inside diameter just
slightly smaller than the capstan on the drive, so it would fit nice and
tight. I then used fine sandpaper to get the outer diameter to match the
original. Slipped it on the capstan and backed up the hard drive on my
ACS8000.

It is, and it isn't :-). The tapes are the same physical dimensions as,
say, a DC300 cartridge, but the format is not one of the QIC formats. In
fact the tapes are pre-formatted by HP and can't be reformatted by the
drive.
IIRC the 9144 is a 16 track unit, the 9145 is similar but 32 track.
