Thanks much to all who have responded to the quest for media. I am now
hopefully in possession of ISO images that will install.
I bought two cheap tadpoles off of a fellow in MD who keeps coughing up
and listing them. They were sold as is with defects for cheap, which is
always a way to suck me into a new project.
I am hoping one of these or one of my IPC's will allow a small Sparc
system to run online. The alternative is to run the Ultra 5 I have, and
I should probably give in to that, but these are a different earlier
architecture and interesting for that reason.
I will be asking more on tadpole issues sometime soon.
I have a Sparcbook 3 which arrived yesterday. There is another 3tx on
the way to arrive next week. All work but have no media. Two have
batteries which I hope may serve are rebuild articles for a local
battery pack rebuild operation if I get really brave.
I see that to hook up physical exernal SCSI I need an adapter for the
weird square high density connector to probably the 50 pin variety. If
anyone here knows of a source or has spares, I'd love to get them.
I found a very nice and friendly (and pretty dead) mailing list, and
harrassed a member (He may be on here too) who mentioned having some
spares laying about. I did get a positive response, but at this time
I'd take all the disk carriers and oddball disks anyone might spare to
get at least one or two for these to make a proper portable unit.
I appreciate all the help from the list, and will try to respond to all
the offline messages.
thanks to all
Jim

Hi Jim, Hi Jerry,
I have two Tadpoles running Solaris 2.6 (a SparcBook 3 and
an UltrabookII-500) and the installation required ordinary
Solaris media and some patches specific for the OS version
from Tadpole/RDI. Those contained the hardware related drivers, power
management software and a DHCP-tool. For many
years, those have been downloadable from the tadpole ftp
server, but since around 2 years the files disappeared.
Jim, what notebooks do you want to install? Do you have
an U-200 Ultrabook up and running? I think in the U-200
the machine will not boot any more if the NVRAM battery
is empty (no way to recover I fear), but this is not a
problem in the SparcBook 2 and 3...
Best regards,
Erik.
P.S. I am on vacation now and will be back in 2 weeks.

Hello Jim,
AFAIK, there is no separate 32 or 64 bit media. It all shipped as
one media pack. In my observation, Solaris never had the 32-64 bit
issues that I saw on a many platforms, such as AIX and linux.
OTOH, I am more concerned with your installation target.
I don't have extensive experience with Tadpoles, but my understanding
was that those systems typically shipped with hardware specific
media, specific to the unique hardware that they would be running on.
Hope this helps,
Jerry

Sparc 32 bit. media. I have a lot of intel, but low on Sparc stuff.
Also am going to give some Tadpoles a run with it, hopefully.
thanks
