Those are really fun. I did some experiments with acrylic and a mill
a while back, but now, I'd probably try it with a small table-top CNC.

Years ago I had a rack-mount DVM - I think it was HP - that used the
edge-lit displays. They were really crisp, if a little slow. -- Ian
has some history, but ISTR mine was
4-1/2 digit.
