These days you also get various flavours of SATA and
SAS, Fibre
Channel and FireWire. In fact as speeds rise serial interfaces tend
to become the interfacee of choice.
At least until someone notices "hey, if we run another 7 data pairs, we
can get 8 times the data rate for free!". And the cycle of
reincarnation continues....
