you don't need an electrolytic, but if you do make the + connect to vcc
(+5). a low voltage ceramic should also work fine (non-polarized).
I was going to add that you need 5 caps to make that work; but I read
the data sheet - wow - the 233 doesn't need external c's. huh. learn
something new every day.
(i doubt you'd want one but I have a little boards with the 232 chip on
it for the ceiva picture frames for $15. it has a header and a db-9 and
all the caps)
