I just [finally] found the article on the JDR POST
(Power On Self Test)
card. The article is August 1993 "Electronics Now".
It has the circuit board layout, source code for the two GALs, etc.
Apparently, JDR realized that they could sell a LOT more of their POST
cards by making them available as a kit (at all levels), and then peddling
the parts, such as premade circuit board, and preprogrammed GALs.
Does anybody still use GALs? (Generic Array Logic)
I have two xerox copies of the article sitting in front of me.
Who wants one?
The last time I got one of those $3 POST cards (handles both ISA and
PCI) a couple of years ago from China, there were some 32-pin PLCC
PALCEs on them.
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if they were a knockoff of the EN article
that you cited.
GALs are useful if you're looking to upgrade or service some old
equipment that uses PALs or HALs. I keep a few tubes of them around.
I remember when GALs first came out--I thought that the idea was
incredibly clover.
