It's
beginning to look like many people want to make
stuff available online just to see themselves do it.
Human nature; no way around that - everyone likes a bit of self-promotion.
I don't think this can be underestimated. People like to be personally
invested in a project. It *is* work to do imaging and cataloguing and I
think people do want to see their names attached. I know *I* like it.
But here's an angle I haven't heard people suggest. If the issue really is
just "contributing to the community," then why not put 20 bucks/euros/zlotych
in an envelope to cover media, shipping and inconvenience, and ask them to
send you a physical copy. It won't wallop their bandwidth that way, and you
get your "backup."
If this isn't good enough for you, then maybe the argument isn't really
simply about making such resources available.
