[E]ven a
fully-loaded PDP-8/E is pretty "useless" these days.
Why do you say that?
A PDP8/E will do everything it could do when it
was made. And if you happen to do want to do such a task, it's as
usegful as ever.
Utility is also measured relative to a context, and the context now is
vastly different from what it was when an -8/e was new. Almost all the
things an -8/e did can today be done better, in almost all respects,
with other equipment - its utility for almost all purposes is lower
than other, much cheaper (in sticker price, in space required, in
maintenance, in power draw, etc) devices.
Not quite all; each of those "almost"s is important. But enough so
that I think `pretty "useless"' is, in general, fair.
