VID = Vendor IDentification number, or??
FWIW, I don't know if Linux cares.. under Ubuntu 12.04 it just IDs it as a
RTL 5370 and that's enough, apparently.
Brain fart--my post was for another cheap Chinese USB-ethernet thingie.
I do have the RALink Wifi widget also, which identifies itself as
148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter
Which is correct.
But yes, VID = vendor ID and PID = product ID. You can have your very
own by ponying up 3 kilobucks to the USB registry people. Many Chinese
cheapie vendors simply borrow whatever VID comes to hand--or invent
their own.
But for a few bucks shipped, it's probably a small risk that you'll wind
up with something that only works under Windows.
