If anyone high up at HP has any
brains left, they'd find some way to open-source as much of VMS as possible,
preferably under a BSD-ish license.
No, that would be a bad business decision. VMS is too far gone to make
any sort of comeback, especially with all the cheaper competitors (it
is hard to compete with free!). If anyone has any brains left at HP,
they should be milking VMS for as much as they can until 2020.
You do not kill a cash cow - even a tiny cash cow.
It would be nice if HP let VMS completely loose after 2020, however.
