SSL with FTP has been actively used on one of my
host's servers for over 4
years.
If the data isn't sensitive and only the login information needs to be
protected, you could also use ssh2 to tunnel port 21 and then just use
a regular ftp client and daemon, tunneled through an ssh2 client and
daemon.
