What "modernish" (I think I said since about '90) uses a ferro-resonant
transformer?
The other thing to note is that 3-phase was used to
keep the wiring
"reasonable". Wiring up a 3-phase 24A circuit (and cabling) is much
easier than a single phase 75A circuit (although I've run a 3-phase
75A branch in my shop...100' of #3 wire (4 conductors) is *not* fun).
You could also just parallel three 10AWG wires for each phase. (Or, two
6AWG)
