Most of the containers I've seen prior to the 360 are black instead of blue.
The other way to tell is the supported density. 9 track tapes are all 360 era.
800bpi 7 track was the highest density IBM used on machines like the 1401 or 7090.
If a tape is rated at 556 bpi, for example, it probably started out on earlier
machines. 7 track drives, of course, were available as options on the 360 for data
migration.
