Indeed.
It is especially annoying when people intentionally mix up the two
for marketing purposes. For example, Ethernet is quoted in Mbps or
Gbps. So is Fibre Channel. But in the case of FC, the numbers are
not bps at all, they are baud. And because of the 8b/10b encoding,
this means that the actual speed is 20% less than what you were led to
believe.
The same happens in other places; for example, SAS and SATA storage
channel speeds are really speeds in baud even though they pretend to
be bps. (Same conversion factor because they too use 8b/10b code.)
