Sounds like surplus/liquidators are going the way of the round tube
color television and AM radio. Same here in the Midwest. Dirt cheap new
equipment and our throw-away attitude seems to make this stuff we're
interested in worth less than the plastic it is made of.
You might see if there are any computer recycling outfits: I found a
nice stash at one in Topeka a couple months ago. They are analogous to
a automotive junk yard; they strip useable parts and throw the rest out
back waiting for the rain.
And maybe get a relationship with the large corporate users of these
machines . . . sometimes you can detour a trip to the dump for some of
the jewels.

Where are these places!? As far as I can tell, every one of 'em that once
existed in the Boston area is gone. No more Solid State Sales, Eli
Hefron's, Electronics Superstore, etc, etc. There aren't even a lot of
thrift stores in this area.
The only sources I know of around of here are the MIT flea and a small
surplus store in Manchester NH that doesn't carry much beyond components and
some old test equipment.
Can anyone tell me where within 200 miles of Boston I can find a decent
surplus store or liquidator? Or any contacts for auctions or even dumpster
diving? I'm getting desperate here...
