Actually, that was an accidental side-effect of trying to survive.
We've outgrown the need for that now.
Of course, that's with animals, who (despite PETA)

As a proper libertarian, I can never initiate force (or fraud)
against another person. Though if force is initiated against me, I
am justified in responding with whatever is required.
What if an outraged libertarian PETA member destroys your barbecue
with a catapult-launched Packard-Bell 486? (Seriously, though; how
can you be a libertarian and condemn the freedom of others to protect
animals from pain and suffering?)
