Not really. Somewhere I have an old IBM order form and it shows that you could get a
lot more variations of IBM PCs than you'd expect. Including one or two SS or DS
drives, various cards, different amounts of RAM, etc. There were quite a few
combinations.
Despite my sarcasm I too am fond of the IBM PC. I regard it as THE single machine that
legitamized the entire personal computer movement. Altairs and all the rest had some
significance but it was the IBM PC that was the first truely usable machine for anyone
other than the hobbiest/hacker/programmer. It's just that there are so many of them
out there that I get tired of them. I just pitched two a couple of days ago and I still
have an early 64k model w/ 48k RAM and a monochrome monitor.
