Ok,
perhaps a simple question.
Is there anyway, by inspection of the case, to identify whether or not a
CD-ROM drive will read 512byte records? If not, is there a list of "known"
models that can?

The presense of a 512/2048-byte jumper is a good clue. :^) I think one of the
Sun FAQ's has a list of some of the drives that work. IIRC, I'm using
Toshiba drives on a couple of my Alpha's running OpenVMS.

The Teac's I've got work (on Suns) as do some Sony drives.
They should also work on VMS... I"m going to dig out the VS3100 this
weekend to load it. Just got a DEC DSP3105 drive.
