AUD $25,000 for a Linotype L100 PostScript imagesetter (used).
Has a 68K computer inside it with Adobe ROMs. Communication via serial or AppleTalk.
One of the first high resolution PostScript imagesetters. Put a lot of feet of bromide
paper through it.
Neat! By the standards of the time, those were not really high image
quality, but
definitely adequate and successful for newspaper work. I
remember working with them in the early 1980s.
Even an L100 is very high quality for text work (anything above 1270dpi
has diminished returns for text).
But unsuitable for quality halftones and 4-colour process, obviously.
However, soon afterwards I had the opportunity to work with _allegedly_
the first PostScript DRUM imagesetter imported to Australia: A
Scangraphic. An _extremely_ well engineered box both in hardware and
software. Capable of very high precision separations. I've rarely had
the pleasure of using such excellent equipment.
