I have a small NeXT collection (getting bigger ;-))

wondering about was the need to maintain originality. For example, I
have one NeXT cube with an interesting pedigree (it has NeXT asset tags
on it, and some interesting bits), but it's a 68030 motherboard... the
low end cube. I have a NeXT Turbo board I can put into the case, but
then the unit wouldn't be "original" any more... does that matter?
Personally in situations like that I don't like doing anything that
can't be put 'right' again at a later date - so if it involves drilling
holes in cases and things I wouldn't do it, but if it's just a board
swap I would (and hang on to the original board so I could always put
things back how they were)
cheers
