I have one as well, but only tested it a bit using RT-11.
So I can't help you at all.
If either or both of you get a chance to power up your SMS-1000
systems sometime you could answer some questions regardless of
whatever OS you may have installed on the system at the time.
First question: What firmware version does your SMS-1000 system
report? That is reported by IDENTIFY under the top level STATUS menu
item. My SMS-1000 reports "Firmware V0.6". I am really curious if
there is newer firmware version which might have a more compatible
MSCP controller implementation.
Second question: What is the set of CSR addresses available to choose
from to configure the DU device? This is under the top
level menu
item CONFIGURATION, ADDRESSES, BUS ADDRESSES, DU DEVICE ADDR.
The manual lists the CSR address choices as {17772150, 17760334,
17760340, 17760344, 17760350, 17760354, 17772154}.
My SMS-1000 lists the CSR address choices as {17772150, 17772154,
17772160, 17772164, 17777150, 17777154, 17777160}.
Sample output from my system:
