That's because they didn't have ebay back then.
If you had an Alto II, and decided that you were
willing to part with it,
how much money would you ask for it? Bear in mind that it was the world's
first mass-produced personal workstation, and that it was NEVER offered for
sale.
If I had a bunch of them, and they were taking up too much space in my
living room, I would pay up to $100 for somebody to take it away. (OK,
I'm projecting. That's the kind of deal I look for.)
