Does anyone have any info about 1970s-era National SemiconductorLED modules?

 I stopped reading after about the third book.  Not that it makes
 much difference, the watch could have black emiting diodes for
 the display. 
The first book.  The comment about thinking that digital watches are a
neat idea is from one of the first paragraphs.
