see how LRRL is any superior to LRLR. LRRL would be noticeably crooked,

I get the impression that you two are using the same terms for different
things. Are you both thinking of a single column of Macs, one Mac wide and
any number tall? Or is someone perhaps thinking of a double-wide column?
Maybe it's time for ASCII art. I'm not volunteering.
